Coastal Risk Index

The Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance (ORRAA) approached us with a vision: to create the Coastal Risk Index (CRI), an open-source platform that assesses coastal risk and values nature as a solution.

Our collaboration began by defining the platform’s vision, developing a distinctive look and feel, and crafting a compelling web narrative to inspire stakeholders around the principle that better data drives better decisions and outcomes.

Through workshops with key stakeholders, we gathered insights on diverse user needs and tested interface concepts. These inputs shaped a user-centered design that equips insurers, investors, and policymakers with the tools to safeguard people and assets.

We designed multiple ways for users to interact with the data, integrating flooding, damage, and population metrics into intuitive visualizations. Users can explore flooding impacts at the national and subnational levels, analyze cross-border impacts, or draw custom areas to gain detailed insights. Interactive maps and data visualizations provide critical context, helping users understand how natural habitats like mangroves and coral reefs mitigate financial losses and protect vulnerable communities.

The data portal includes several features to enhance user experience and engagement: a projects tab showcasing the revitalization work of ORRAA and its partners; a portfolio view for saving and organizing locations; and, for registered users, access to global data at 90m resolution along with advanced map controls and features.

To illustrate the CRI’s capabilities with higher resolution data, we built an interactive case study on coastal risk in the Dominican Republic that integrates data at a 30m resolution. Users can compare damages under climate and ecosystem scenarios, offering critical insights for investors, insurers, governments, and international organizations on how adaptation and management can mitigate risk.

We supported ORRAA’s communications strategy for Climate Week NYC 2024 by demonstrating how the CRI integrates flood risk, economic drivers, social vulnerability, and the protective value of natural habitats.
